Inuit Games Inuit Games http://gamesmuseum.uwaterloo.ca/VirtualExhibits/Inuit/english/ Referrals: 1254
Many Inuit games are traditional and require no equipment. These latter games concern physical strength, agility, and endurance. Some traditional games may have been learned in Asia before the Inuit migrated across the Bering Strait (c2000bc), while others were undoubtedly learned after migration, through contact with southern aboriginal peoples who had migrated at an earlier time from Asia into the western hemisphere
Arctic Winter Games Arctic Winter Games http://www.awg.ca/ Referrals: 1197
The Arctic Winter Games formally began with the registration of the Arctic Winter Games Corporation under the Canada Corporations Act on January 18, 1968. In 1992 the Arctic Winter Games Corporation changed its name to the Arctic Winter Games International Committee to eliminate confusion with other Games organizations and to reflect the increasing international flavor of the Games.
Inuktitut Living Dictionary Inuktitut Living Dictionary http://www.livingdictionary.com/ Referrals: 1203
It is hoped that Inuktitut speakers in all communities will participate in adding to the Inuktitut Living Dictionary.

We are beginning with only a small number of terms and definitions. Much remains to be done. Anyone who would like to add new material or fill in the blanks for elements that are missing from material already in the dictionary are welcome to do so. In particular, it is hoped to add very soon material in other dialects of Inuktitut.

A group of linguists in Iqaluit, under the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth, will monitor all suggested additions to the Living Dictionary to ensure that a consistent level of quality is maintained.
Zacharias Kunuk / Isuma Productions Zacharias Kunuk / Isuma Productions http://www.isuma.ca/bio?what=13 Referrals: 1112

Producer-director of Atanarjuat, Canada's first dramatic feature film produced in an aboriginal language, Kunuk's previous credits include Qaggiq (Gathering Place, 1989), Nunaqpa (Going Inland, 1991), Saputi (Fish Traps, 1993) Nunavut (Our Land, 13 x 30 mins 1995) and documentaries Arvik (Bowhead, 1998) and Nipi (Voice, 1999). Winner of eight Canada Council grants, Kunuk is also a hunter, a member of the Board of Igloolik Coop and Hunters and Trappers Organization, and a former Board member of Nunavut Arctic College.

Lucie Idlout Lucie Idlout http://www.lucieidlout.com/ Referrals: 1144
Lucie’s raw, commanding style is not intended for the lighthearted. She takes you on an emotional journey through life drawing on themes that are common to us all; heartbreak, one night stands, loss, tenderness and occasionally a little rage. Her fearless insights as well as her songs’ compelling social relevance have made her debut cd "E5770 – my Mothers Name" an incredibly gripping work.
Tanya Tagaq Gillis Tanya Tagaq Gillis http://www.tanyatagaq.com/ Referrals: 1172
Gillis was born in the remote Inuit town of Cambridge Bay (population 2,500). Coming south in the 1990s to study visual arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, she was heading, she believed, for a career as artist and art teacher. While living in Halifax, Gillis was exposed to a whole new world of music, including electronica, dance music and rave. Homesick for the sounds of the Arctic, she began to teach herself traditional Inuit throat singing. This is an unaccompanied pattern of improvised vocalization, usually sung in harmony by two women and emulating the sounds of nature – the crash of breaking ice, for example. Soon, Gillis was performing solo at festivals and clubs in Canada and Europe. In 2001, she toured with Icelandic phenomenon, Bjork, and won favourable reviews of her own.

Michael Kusugak Michael Kusugak http://www.michaelkusugak.com/ Referrals: 1211
While in school, Michael enjoyed writing stories and poems, but he never thought of becoming an author until he met Robert Munsch. “He stayed with us during Children’s Book Week once, and I told him all kinds of legends. He suggested that I write them down, so we worked on one together, and eventually it was published!” That story, A Promise is a Promise, is based on one of Michael’s childhood memories. He explains, “I take things that are native to me, such as the northern lights, and create a story around them.”

Michael has since published many other titles, including Baseball Bats for Christmas, Hide and Sneak, Northern Lights: The Soccer Trails, My Arctic 1,2,3, Arctic Stories and Who Wants Rocks?— all of which are stunningly complemented by Vladyana Langer Krykorka's artwork. Northern Lights won the Ruth Schwartz Award in 1994. A Promise is a Promise and Northern Lights have been developed as CD-ROMs.
The Inuit Heritage Centre The Inuit Heritage Centre http://www.bakerlake.org/HTML/3105-InuitHerit.htm Referrals: 1125
The Inuit Heritage Centre, or Itsarnittakarvik (Inuktitut word meaning place of anything old) was officially opened in June 1998. The Centre was established at the request of the Elders to preserve and promote the unique inland culture of the different groups of Inuit who now reside in Baker Lake. The Elders wanted a place where they could put their knowledge in exhibits and hands on displays so they can reach the younger generation in a way they understand.
Kenojuak Ashevak Kenojuak Ashevak http://www.collectionscanada.ca/women/002026-502-e.html Referrals: 2060
Companion of the Order of Canada (1982), recipient of the Aboriginal Arts Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement (1995), member of the Royal Academy of Arts (1974), and recent inductee into Canada's Walk of Fame (2001), Kenojuak Ashevak is probably Inuit art's best-known personality. For this woman who first began drawing at age thirty, it is a status gained primarily as a result of her impressive graphic oeuvre created over more than forty years.
Avataq Cultural Institute Avataq Cultural Institute http://www.avataq.qc.ca/ Referrals: 1188
The Avataq Cultural Institute was created in 1980 with a mandate to protect and promote Inuit language and culture in Nunavik.

Since its inception, the Institute has recognized the valuable role of Elders in Inuit society. As a result, it pushed for the creation of the Inuit Elders Conference, the first of which was held in Kangirsuk in 1981.

In Inuit culture, the Elders are the trustees of wisdom and knowledge that has been passed down over thousands of years. Since the arrival of the Qallunaat (non-Inuit) in the second half of the 19th century, Elders have seen their role in the community and family gravely diminished. However, they are still the only ones able to transmit the wealth of traditional Inuit culture to future generations.

Tattoos of the Arctic Tattoos of the Arctic http://www.vanishingtattoo.com/arctic_tattoos.htm Referrals: 1391
This essay focuses upon a comparative analysis of tattooing practices among the St. Lawrence Island Yupiget, the Inuit peoples of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and tattooed mummies from Europe and Asia. While often dismissed as a somewhat “mystical” and “incomprehensible” aesthetic, Arctic tattoo was a lived symbol of common participation in the cyclical and subsistence culture of the arctic hunter-gatherer. Tattoo recorded the “biographies” of personhood, reflecting individual and social experience through an array of significant relationships that oscillated between the poles of masculine and feminine, human and animal, sickness and health, the living and the dead. Arguably, tattoos provided a nexus between the individual and communally defined forces that shaped Inuit and Yupiget perceptions of existence.
Virtual Museum of Labrador Virtual Museum of Labrador http://www.labradorvirtualmuseum.ca/ Referrals: 1224
The Labrador Eskimos, or Inuit as they call themselves, are the direct descendants of the Thule Inuit, an Alaskan people who migrated into Canada and Greenland about 1000 years ago. Archaeologists believe that the Thule people first arrived on the Labrador coast around 1400 A.D., coming southward from Baffin Island.

Hi. I am a student of Political Science at the University of Calgary and I have spent my semester working on an ongoing research paper regarding the active role played by Inuit women in the political landscape of northern Canada. Through my research I have learned about the NIYC and I just wanted to say that I think you folks are doing great work here and you should be very proud of yourselves for all your accomplishments, as well as your dreams.

How many lives do we have to lose? How much longer will we let addictions be a barrier to our prosperity? When will we stand up and take action?

For me, that time is now.
